Stray Dogs at Funeral of Woman Who Fed Them Came to Say Bye

When stray dogs arrived at the funeral home where Margarita Suarez was being laid to rest, her daughter knew they had come to say goodbye.

"They stayed with my mother all day, and then at night they all stayed — but in the morning all the dogs vanished but one, but one hour before we brought my mom to be cremated the dogs came back and grouped around as if to say goodbye," Patricia Urrutia told ABC News.

"I swear by God that it was beautiful, marvelous."

Suarez had long resided in Merida, Yucatan, where she was known for feeding stray dogs and cats in neighborhood, her daughter explained. Sometimes the animals would come to her door, and sometimes she would feed them on her strolls through town.

At the age of 71 she became ill, however, and died.

On March 15, the day of the funeral, several dogs arrived at the door of the funeral home — which was very unusual, said the staff. Urritia knew why they had come, however, and said to let them in, much to the curiosity of the staff.

Just a few days later, Urritia posted some of the pictures to Facebook, where they were shared hundreds of thousands of times. Of course, questions began pouring in from all sorts of people, including a few reporters.

"My mom has always been good with all animals and people," Urrutia explained in what became a regular response on the social network. "Always fed the dogs on her block and the 20 stray cats that lived there."

The most amazing thing, said Urritia, is that her mother's funeral wasn't held in her hometown, but rather some 800 miles away in Cuernavaca, Morelos. Urrutia said that there was no way these particular dogs were ever fed by her mother, but she had a feeling the strays knew somehow that she was their protector.

"When I was in a moment of so much pain these dogs that came, they showed me that everything was going to be okay," she said.
