A Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School deputy was suspended Monday after he was allegedly caught sleeping in his marked vehicle outside of the school after 5 p.m., a Broward Sheriff Office spokeswoman said, according to WPLG-TV.
Authorities suspended Deputy Moises Carotti with pay pending an internal affairs investigation, sheriff office spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said, per the television station.
A Stoneman Douglas student and other deputy on campus informed the sheriff's office that they found Carotti in his vehicle allegedly sleeping and another deputy was sent to the school to relieve him, Coleman-Wright said, WPLG-TV noted.
Seventeen people, mostly students, were killed and more than a dozen injured at the Parkland, Florida school last month in one of the worst mass shootings at a school in U.S. history.
About 30 minutes before Moises was found asleep, other deputies arrested Zachary Cruz, the brother of alleged Stoneman Douglas gunman Nikolas Cruz, for trespassing on the campus, WPLG-TV wrote.
Zachary Cruz, 18, had been told numerous times to stay away from Stoneman Douglas, but he allegedly rode his skateboard onto the grounds to "reflect on the school shooting and soak it in," deputies said, per the television station.
WPEC-TV wrote that a judge set a $500,000 bond on Zachary Cruz, noting that the incident went beyond trespassing since he allegedly ignored warnings to stay away from the school then lied to deputies about where he lived.
U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio issued a statement about Carotti Tuesday, expressing shock over the alleged incident.
"Of all the schools in America, you would think this would be the safest one right now," Rubio stated. "This is so outrageous it's almost impossible to believe."
WPLG-TV wrote that on Tuesday, two Stoneman Douglas students were arrested after allegedly bringing knives to school, ratcheting up worries about security there.
"Security at Marjory Stoneman Douglas continues to be an urgent priority for us," Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said, per WPLG-TV. "Given the developments over the past 24 hours, we will further enhance school safety measures. Communications on details will be forthcoming tomorrow."
Former Stoneman Douglas school resource Deputy Scot Peterson resigned after Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said that he failed to engage Cruz during the shooting, WPLG-TV wrote. Peterson's attorney pushed back, stating that his client did not know at the time where the shots were coming from and that he was not a "coward," the television station wrote.
