Steve Wozniak: Robots Won't Destroy Us, Just Make Us Pets

By    |   Friday, 26 June 2015 06:56 AM EDT

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has revised his previous thinking when it comes to artificial intelligence, saying that robots probably won't destroy us — just make us their pets.

"They’re going to be smarter than us and if they’re smarter than us then they’ll realize they need us," Wozniak said at the Freescale Technology Forum 2015 in Austin, Texas, reported TechRepublic.com.

"We want to be the family pet and be taken care of all the time. I got this idea a few years ago and so I started feeding my dog filet steak and chicken every night because 'do unto others,'" he continued.

Like Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and British physicist Stephen Hawking, Wozniak has in the past lamented the dangers of AI. All of them agree that technology will advance to the point where machines are "superintelligent," however they've wavered in guessing whether the machines will like or dislike their human progenitors.

"I agree that the future is scary and very bad for people. If we build these devices to take care of everything for us, eventually they'll think faster than us and they'll get rid of the slow humans…" Wozniak said earlier this year. "Will we be the gods? Will we be the family pets? Or will we be ants that get stepped on? I don't know about that."

It seems that after pondering it for at least a few months, Wozniak is now betting on the humans-as-pets scenario.

"It’s actually going to turn out really good for humans," he said at the conference this week. "And it will be hundreds of years down the stream before [artificially intelligent robots would] even have the ability."

"They’ll be so smart by then that they’ll know they have to keep nature, and humans are part of nature. So I got over my fear that we’d be replaced by computers," he concluded.
