More States Turn to Gambling, Sports Betting

Thursday, 03 November 2011 01:06 PM EDT

Still facing severe budget problems, more states are looking to sports betting and other forms of gambling as a possible new source of revenue, according to a report by Stateline.org.

New Jersey voters, for example, are headed to the polls Nov. 8 to decide on a ballot initiative that would legalize betting on all sorts of sports.

According to Stateline, some 10 states that were dealing with big falloffs in revenues due to the recession expanded gambling in a variety of ways last year to help bring in more dollars. Pennsylvania was one of them, adding more table and poker games at already existing casinos.

This year, Stateline reports, lawmakers in Florida, Illinois, and Massachusetts are debating “whether to build new destination casinos in major cities, such as Chicago and Miami.”

Maine, meanwhile, will vote next week on whether to add slot machines at racetracks.
