States With Worst Quality of Life Fall Mostly in the South: Study

The list of states with the worst quality of life is dominated by the south, according to new data compiled by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The OECD, which promotes policies to help improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world, rated each state from zero to 10 in different categories like health, safety, housing, access to broadband, civic engagement, education, jobs, environment, and income, according to The Washington Post.

According to the scores, Mississippi has the worst quality of life, followed by Alabama, Arkansas, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Georgia.

Monica Brezzi, author of the report and head of regional statistics at the OECD, told 24/7 Wall St. that the organization looked for objective data to create the report as opposed to existing survey information.

"For example, one of the nine measures, health, is based on the mortality rate and life expectancy in each region, rather than on asking people if they feel well," 24/7 Wall St. noted. "Similarly, another determinant of well-being, safety, is measured by the homicide rate rather than personal responses as to whether people feel safe where they live."

Virginia was the only southern state to rank in the top 25, coming in at No. 22.

Brezzi told 24/7 Wall St. that the United States, as a country, did not score well in the health and safety categories overall.

"With the exception of Hawaii, none of the American states are in the top 20 percent for health or for safety across the OECD regions," she said, adding that Alabama rated the second worst state for health in the U.S.

According to the survey, the state with best quality of life was New Hampshire, with a score of 77.6, followed by Minnesota (76.2), Vermont (74.8), Iowa (72.9), and North Dakota (72.4).
