California, New York, and Florida are the states that hand out the most speeding tickets per year, but new research show they are not the states where you are most likely to get a ticket. That’s because those states have the largest populations, so naturally they hand out the most tickets.
A new survey reveals a more accurate statistical model of where you are most — and least — likely to get a speeding.
The list of the states where you are most likely to receive a speeding ticket is based on research that calculates the number of tickets handed out per 10,000 people. So while police in California, New York and Florida are writing the largest numbers of tickets your odds of receiving a speeding ticket are surprisingly higher elsewhere.
To arrive at their findings, researchers looked at the total number of speeding tickets issued per year for 48 of the 50 states, then compared this with data across multiple years within their time frame. The figures showed that California had the highest ticket count of 1,053,925, while New York was second with 712,370 and Florida was third at 704,092, 24/7 Wall Street noted.
Researchers also found that states with low populations had the smallest ticket count, with North Dakota seeing the least number of speeding tickets issue (4,512). Vermont was not far behind with just 10,993, followed by West Virginia at 12,916.
However, researchers then narrowed the study's parameters to look at the number of tickets issued per 10,000 and the final standings were very different.

Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the spectrum these are the top 10 states where people are least likely to get ticketed:
- West Virginia
- Michigan
- North Dakota
- Illinois
- Alabama
- Vermont
- Pennsylvania
- Colorado
- Montana
- Oklahoma
