$54 Starbucks Drink Sets Record for Most Expensive, and He Got It Free

The most expensive drink ever ordered at Starbucks came to more than $54 — and the customer got it for free.

One of the Seattle-based company's customers used his loyalty card for a free Sexagintuple Vanilla Bean Mocha Frappuccino, which includes 60 shots of espresso, and is valued at $54.75, a new record.

The customer, identified only as Andrew, told Consumerist via email that he was trying to top last-year's $47.30 frappuccino, which set a record at the time. That drink contained 40 shots of espresso and additives such as a mocha drizzle and a caramel brulee topping that increased the price while sacrificing taste.

Andrew's goal was to also be able to enjoy his expressive drink.

Starbucks public relations representative Linda Mills said that, based on pictures Andrew posted on Twitter, it appears he was in a Dallas location.

"This type of beverage order is totally excessive and not something we encourage people to do," Mills told Seattle Weekly. "Nor is it safe."

Andrew enlisted the baristas' help for his plan.

"So, this might sound a little weird, but I saw a video on YouTube where a guy orders the most expensive Starbucks drink. I want to beat the record," Andrew told the Consumerist. "The cashier had seen the video, and through math and teamwork they figured out how to make a record-busting drink that would fit in his cup and break the record.

"It took a few minutes to figure out all the math, but in the end, it took about 55 shots to get us over the $50 line, and we just rounded it up to 60 to make it easy. Everyone behind the counter seemed to be on board with the plan, and they produced the massive confection in about 10 minutes."

Consumerist estimated that Andrew's 128-ounce drink contained 4.5 grams of caffeine, or about 75 milligrams per shot. According to Popular Science, 10 grams could be a lethal overdose of caffeine for most adults.

"I gotta say, it was delicious."
