"Star Wars" spin-offs are on ice after "Solo" failed to perform at the box-office, with takings standing at $196.2 million after three weeks on release in the U.S.
"Star Wars" spin-offs are on ice after a poor "Solo" showing, Contact Music reported.
The film has failed to perform at the box-office, with takings standing at $196.2 million after three weeks on release in the U.S., and now LucasFilm has reportedly decided to pause all future "Star Wars" spin-off movies and rather focus on the official series.
Last year reports emerged that Disney planned to produce a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, but anonymous sources told Collider that although the film was in active development, those working on it have jumped ship and are no longer involved.
"Solo" is expected to lose at least $50 million for Disney and LucasFilm and will go down as the first "Star Wars" film to fail financially.
The idea behind creating the spin-offs was to fill in the blanks in the storylines between the main "Star Wars" films, however, with such a short space between releases, experts are now suggesting that the underperformance of "Solo" could be linked to industry fatigue, Contact Music noted.
In light of this, Collider said that LucasFilm and Disney will instead focus on releasing "Star Wars: Episode IX" and the ensuing trilogy.
However, Lucasfilm sources told ABC News on Thursday that the reports were "inaccurate" and that "multiple" Star Wars films were currently in development that have not been officially announced.
We will just have to wait and see.
