"This is going to be one of those films that every kid in the world is going to want to see and their parents are going to have to take them," Jay Self of the Savannah Film Office told the Morning News in July.
The first film, which grossed more than $140 million worldwide, featured David Hasselhoff in the live-action scenes.
The film is based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon about the underwater world of Bikini Bottom with all its residents, including the title character.
Fans seemed excited about the sequel and took to Twitter to discuss it.
"SpongeBob SquarePants 2" is scheduled to hit theaters in February 2015.
