Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, one of three American heroes who stopped a likely terrorist attack on a Paris-bound train over the summer, is in stable condition after being stabbed in the torso outside of a Sacramento bar early Thursday morning.
"He is alive and in stable condition at this time," an Air Force spokesperson
told NBC News. "We do not have any information as to the events preceding the incident."
A Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman said that the incident involved a "verbal argument" that began after midnight in a bar near Travis Air Force Base, where Stone is stationed, and ended up on the street.
The spokeswoman said the incident did not appear to have anything to do with Stone's act of heroism that earned him and two friends the French Legion of Honor two months ago.
"It appears it was happenstance," she said.
Stone was transported to UC Davis Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
NBC affiliate KCRA reported that a man and a woman were questioned by police, but it is unclear if they were detained or arrested.
"Everybody send prayers out to the Stone family today," Alek Skarlatos, who stopped the French train-attacker alongside Stone,
tweeted Thursday.
Stone, Skarlatos, and Anthony Sadler, all longtime friends, were celebrated for their heroic act in France in a Sept. 11 parade in downtown Sacramento.
Skarlatos recently told reporters he was saddened after learning his college in Roseburg, Oregon, Umpqua Community College, was the site of a mass shooting last week.
