A Southwest Airlines plane with a broken window was forced to make an emergency landing in Cleveland, Ohio, Wednesday morning, The New York Post reported.

The flight was carrying 76 passengers from Chicago to Newark when it was suddenly diverted.

Only once the plane was grounded did the reason for the emergency stop become clear.

"On my way to NJ for work and #Southwest957 gets a window crack," one passenger tweeted about the ordeal, adding that fortunately only the outside glass was broken.

Another passenger shared photos of the "cracked" glass to Twitter, which showed a broken window.

"@SouthwestAir #WN957 diverts and makes emergency landing in CLE due to busted window," Chaikel tweeted.

In a video clip posted by another passenger, a crew member can be heard explaining to occupants that they would be escorted off the plane and onto another flight.

It is not immediately clear what caused the window to break and no injuries were reported, but Southwest Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement.

"The crew of Southwest Flight 957, with scheduled service from Chicago Midway International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, made the decision to divert the plane to Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport for maintenance review of one of the multiple layers of a window pane," the airline said, according to Fox News.

"The flight landed uneventfully in Cleveland. The aircraft has been taken out of service for maintenance review, and our local Cleveland Employees are working diligently to accommodate the 76 Customers on a new aircraft to Newark."

The incident comes two weeks after Jennifer Riordan was nearly sucked out of the window of another Southwest flight when an exploding engine caused the glass to shatter midair.

The plane made an emergency landing and Riordan was rushed to hospital, but she later died form her extensive injuries.
