Singer Sophie B. Hawkins is pregnant again at age 50 after being implanted with her own frozen embryo with sperm provided by a donor and expects to deliver a child in July, but she will be doing it alone.
Hawkins told
People magazine she faces the fear of raising a new born on her own at her age, but believed it was the best thing for her and her 6-year-old son Dashiell.
The New York Daily News reported that that Hawkins broke up with her partner and manager, Gigi Gatson, in August 2014 after a six-year relationship.
"I found Dashiell really needs a sibling," Hawkins told People. "My son has one parent who's 50. I want him to have a family of young people, too. I went through waking up crying and saying, 'Am I too old? Will I suddenly at 51 have my knees give out?' Now I don't have any of those fears because I feel healthy and strong. I'm also setting up a good net of support, and that's the key to anybody having a child."
Hawkins said she has been trying to do her homework about what it is like to be alone and pregnant.
"I interviewed a lot of divorced women and they said, 'It's so much easier to do it alone. You don't have the pressure or the criticism or judgment of someone else,'" Hawkins said. "Of course then you ask, 'Will I miss the emotional support?' Well, to tell you the truth, I'm getting that more from my friends than I ever got in a relationship."
Best known for her Billboard Top 10 singles "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" in 1992 and "As I Lay Me Down" in 1995, Hawkins has always marched to the beat of her own drummer,
wrote MTV biographer Mark Deming.
"A proudly idiosyncratic singer and songwriter who embraces an eclectic range of musical influences and isn't afraid to be nakedly confessional in her music, Sophie B. Hawkins enjoyed unexpected commercial success with her debut album, but since then has opted to follow her muse rather than a major label's marketing department," Deming wrote.
