A Pennsylvania son won $7 million on a scratch-off lottery ticket that his father gave to him in a get-well card.
Joseph Amorese, 46, of Easton, was recovering from hernia surgery when his
dad gave him a $25 lottery ticket to help him feel better, CBS New York reported.
“I took my glasses off, I’m looking at it, I was pretty shocked to say the least,” Amorese told CBS. “I had surgery so I didn’t jump up and down, but in my mind I was jumping up and down.”
Asked if the big win helped him heal faster, Amorese said, “All the pain I felt, I did not feel for at least a couple of days.”
He told The Associated Press that he called his wife to tell her the news: "I said, 'Honey, I think we won $7 million.' And there was silence on the other end for a long time. She was too stunned to talk.”
The lump sum payout on the ticket will be $4.6 million.
Amorese and his wife, Jodi, have only been married 10 months. At a news conference, Jodi Amorese said, “Holy cow, holy cow, it really is an unbelievable experience.”
The two plan to continue working, and maybe take a second honeymoon, CBS said.
“It gives us a lot more freedom than we had before, and maybe look toward retirement a little bit sooner than I was expecting,” Amorese added.
Amorese, 46, works for Verizon and his wife is a social worker, AP said.
Lottery tickets can make good gifts. Last year, a 19-year-old girl got two lottery tickets from her dad for her birthday. One was a $4 million winner.
