Even though fans only had a few days’ notice a new album was on its way, Solange’s "A Seat at the Table" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 this week and helped her set a record with sister Beyonce.
Solange’s third full length album, “A Seat at the Table” is billed as a walk through the black experience and an “artistic triumph,” according to Forbes. All of her albums have been critically acclaimed, but this is the first to hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
Although several videos have been released, no single has been formally announced.
The album’s No. 1 position on the charts means Solange and sister Beyonce have become the first sisters to both have a No. 1 album in the same year, according to USA Today. Only two other sets of siblings have achieved this feat: Janet and Michael Jackson, and rappers Master P and Silkk the Shocker.
Solange’s new album was expected to come in second to Bon Iver's highly anticipated “22, A Million,” which took the No. 2 spot for the week.
Solange's album sold 72,000 album units, which includes streaming and actual album sales.
Beyonce congratulated Solange on her new album by posting a video from “A Seat at the Table” to her social media pages. “Congrats to my sister on creating this beautiful work of art. I could not be more proud of you,” she wrote on Facebook and Instagram.
