Director Sofia Coppola is reportedly negotiating to direct a live-action film version of Disney's "The Little Mermaid."
The script has already been developed, with
Caroline Thompson ("Edward Scissorhands," "The Addams Family") writing the latest, according to Deadline Hollywood. The website said previous drafts were submitted by Fifty Shades Of Grey screenwriter Kelly Marcel and Shame writer Abi Morgan.

Disney's animated feature adapted the 1837 fairy tale from Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, which tells of a mermaid willing to trade her voice and life in the sea for legs to win the heart of a human prince.
Coppola, the daughter of "The Godfather" director Francis Ford Coppola, won a 2003 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for "Lost in Translation," which she also directed. She has also directed "The Bling Ring," with Emma Watson.
The character Ariel has already appeared in the flesh on the small screen. Actress JoAnna Garcia portrayed
Ariel in a recent episode of the ABC fairy tale drama "Once Upon A Time," which also features other classic Disney characters such as Snow White, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan.
