Movable yellow vending machines called Snapbots have started to sell Snapchat video glasses in different locations for one day at a time before moving on to a new location.
The $130 Spectacles glasses have cameras in them to record 10-second videos that then upload to Snapchat. The Snapbot vending machines that sell the glasses have a cartoon-like appearance with one screen “eye” and a mouthlike opening. The screen lets users “try on” the glasses — which come in coral, black and teal — virtually before buying them.
Yellow balloons will top the vending machines to make them easier to find, according to The Associated Press. An online map will show interested consumers where the machines will be about 24 hours ahead of time. The first location on Thursday was in Venice Beach, California, where Snapchat is headquartered.
Snapchat is a photo and video sharing app that has 150 million active users worldwide. The app allows users to post photos that are laster self-deleted by the app, although they can be preserved through screen shots and other methods. The app also allows for private messaging and live events such as sports and music. Brand and celebrity content is also featured. Filters allow users to give special effects to pictures, which can then be posted on other social media sites if desired.
USA Today reported lines were long on the first day of Snapbot video glasses sales in Venice Beach, with the Spectacles selling out and some buyers turned away. Pairs of the glasses turned up later on eBay for as much as $950.
