A Hong Kong man was caught Sunday trying to smuggle 94 iPhones into China by strapping them to his body.
Customs officials at the Fuitan Port in Shenzhen noticed that the man was walking strangely, and while a search of his bags revealed nothing suspicious, the man set off alarms when walking through a
metal detector, CNN reported.
Photos of the suspect online show more than $49,000 worth of iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S devices taped to the man's chest, abdomen, crotch, and thighs.
The popular devices sell for more on mainland China than in Hong Kong because of import taxes, creating a black market for iPhones, CNN said. Eighteen smugglers have been caught strapping electronic products to their bodies since December.
Other smugglers have tried getting iPhones to China by speedboating them in and using a
zip line, International Business Times reported.
Prices for the iPhones on the black market reached as high as $3,000 before the devices became available for sale legally in October, IBT said.
