Savvy smartphone users have figured out how to create holograms on the cheap by cutting up old CD jewel cases — and the trend is really taking off this summer.
One beautiful example uncovered on social media by
Wired magazine shows a blue butterfly flapping its wings.
Among the most popular tutorial videos explaining how anyone can construct their own hologram chamber comes from YouTube user "MrWhoseTheBoss."
As he explains, all you'll need is a CD case, an x-acto knife, graph paper, tape, and a pen. Cut out four identical trapezoid shapes from the CD case, tape them together, and you're good to go. You'll also need a smartphone, of course, but the videos that fuel the 3-D effect are widely available for free on YouTube.
Gathered below are a few examples from hologram enthusiasts who posted their results to social media websites like Twitter, Instagram, and Vine.
