The English language is constantly evolving with the times and so are the slang words we use. Some are just plain annoying, while others have made it into the dictionary. Then there are the ones that have been used so often that they have become part of our everyday life, like these nine best slang words of 2019, which were highlighted by Reader's Digest.

  1. Curved. A person who has been rejected romantically has been curved. This includes engaging with someone who avoids topics of commitment or refuses to define a relationship.
  2. Ratioed. This is a way of measuring a person's popularity on Twitter by comparing their comments to the number of likes and retweets they receive. Getting ratioed means that the replies to your posts are outnumbered by the retweets or likes.
  3. Flex. This has a literal and figurative meaning. Flexing is basically a way of showing off, whether it be your physique (flexing a muscle) or showing off other traits or belongings that give you one-up on someone else.
  4. Ship. In this instance, ship does not mean a large boat but describes the desire to be in a relationship (ship for short) with someone.
  5. JOMO. First there was FOMO — the fear of missing out — and now there is JOMO, which is the joy of missing out. Introverts rejoice.
  6. KK. When it comes to texting, abbreviations are everything. Why waste time typing out a whole word when you can shorten it down to a letter or two? In this case, first there was "OK, cool," then there was "K, Kewl," and now it is simply KK.
  7. Fam. Millennials are all about sounding cool, which is why "fam" has now replaced family — because it seemingly sounds cooler.
  8. Snack. No, this does not mean a quick bite to eat. Snack has now become a slang word that describes someone who is good looking.
  9. Eyebleach. Seeing too many horrible things can leave a person feeling like their eyes need a good cleaning — or some eyebleach.
