Skype Translates Calls Instantly From One Language to Another

New software from Microsoft will translate Skype conversations instantly, allowing speakers of two different languages to have a one-on-one conversation without an interpreter, according to the tech website The Verge.

Skype started testing of the new software on Monday with a broad audience of English and Spanish speakers, according to The Verge. The software had been in limited tests and demonstrations before the big rollout this week.

"For more than a decade, Skype has been breaking down geographical barriers to make every day audio and video communications possible," Skype said on its blog Monday. "Using innovations from Microsoft Research, Skype is now removing another barrier to make it possible for people to communicate irrespective of what language they speak."

Skype said the Spanish and English translation is just the beginning and its instant messaging system will translate more than 40 languages. Skype said customers using Microsoft Windows 8.1 on their desktop or devices can access Skype Translator.

Skype released a video of the translator in use, with school children at Peterson School in Mexico City and Stafford Elementary School in Tacoma, Washington, playing a game in which they asked questions to determine the location of the other school.

"One classroom of children speaking Spanish and the other speaking English, Skype Translator removed this language barrier and enabled them to communicate," said Skype.

Darrell Etherington of TechCrunch wrote that while the video of the translator looks impressive, he would like to see comments from independent users of the software before giving it a ringing endorsement.

"The early tests look promising, but everything we've seen so far has been from Skype direct and likely involved a lot of control," Etherington wrote. "The classroom tests in the video also involve mostly fairly rudimentary translation, so it'll be very interesting to see how it performs in real-world situations with more complex language. This could be one of the most powerful technologies ever created, if it can live up to the hype, but the real test of its worth begins now."

Microsoft had previously demonstrated the translator working between English and German but that version has not been released by Microsoft yet, according to The Verge.
