A single malt scotch, a Macallan six-liter "M" Decanter by Lalique, sold for a record $631,766 during a Hong Kong auction on Saturday.
Sotheby's Asia sold the bottle for $4.9 million Hong Kong dollars, exceeding its HK $4 million estimate,
reported Epoch Times. Sotheby's New York was the home of the previous record in 2010, when a bottle sold for $460,000, or $3.5 million Hong Kong dollars.
Only four Imperiale “M” Decanters were ever made by the Macallan distillery, making the auctioned bottle a rare commodity. The bottle also had the autograph of its three collaborators – founder and creative director of Baron & Baron Fabien Baron; Bob Dalgarno of Whisky Maker at The Macallan; and Silvio Denz, president and CEO of Lalique.

"We are absolutely delighted at the generosity of the successful bidder of the 'M' 6-litre decanter 'Constantine' in securing such a wonderful contribution to a number of Hong Kong charities and at the same time setting a new world record for The Macallan," The Macallan's David Cox said in a statement. "It is testimony to the craft, quality and passion underpinning the creation of this great decanter. It is a very proud moment for us."
The scotch was named after the Roman emperor Constantine,
according to Asian Age.com. The whisky was taken from a handful of selected Spanish oak sherry casks at the distillery, dated from the 1940s to the early 1990s.
"Today's auction started Sotheby's 2014 worldwide wine sales with a packed saleroom and fierce bidding,"
Robert Sleigh, head of wine of Sotheby's Asia said Saturday in a news release.
"The Macallan 6-litre 'M' Decanter provided a spectacular centerpiece and a new world record for single malt whisky, while we saw impressive prices for 1982 Bordeaux and mature red Burgundy from top domains such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Armand Rousseau. This continued the trend from 2013auctions – a strong market for the finest wines that are ready to enjoy now," said Sleigh.
