Simone Biles said in a statement Monday that former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar sexually abused her along with 140 other women.
“I too am one of the many survivors that was sexually abused by Larry Nassar,” Biles wrote in a pair of Twitter and Instagram posts. “Please believe me when I say it was a lot harder to first speak those words out loud than it is now to put them on paper. There are many reasons that I have been reluctant to share my story, but I now know it is not my fault.”
“It is not normal to receive any type of treatment from a trusted team physician and refer to it horrifyingly as the ‘special’ treatment,” Biles wrote. “For too long I’ve asked myself, ‘Was I too naïve? Was it my fault?’ I now know the answer to those questions. No. No, it was not my fault. No, I will not and should not carry the guilt that belongs to Larry Nassar, USAG, and others.”
Biles also asked for privacy and said she needed more time to work through what had happened to her.
Nassar is being sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to seven assault charges and is expected to get life in prison, USA Today reported.
Biles’ 2016 Olympic teammate Aly Raisman and 2012 Olympian McKayla Maroney also claimed Nassar assaulted them, TMZ Sports reported. Biles led Team USA to a group gold medal in 2016, and scooped up the all-around gold medal for herself.
Twitter commenters were supportive of Biles and proud of her for coming forward.
