Sigourney Weaver will return to the big screen to reprise her role as Ripley in a new “Alien” movie, but the way the studio is handling the latest addition to the franchise is aggravating some fans.
Director Neill Blomkamp announced last week that his “radical reimagining” of the "Alien" world will be made, with Weaver returning as her
popular character, SlashFilm reported.
But this week, Weaver and Blomkamp shared that the new movie will rewrite Ripley’s story, pretending as if the last two movies in the franchise — “Alien 3” and “Alien: Resurrection” — never happened.
“I’m also slightly irritated with this development, specifically the idea of disregarding the third and fourth films. 'Alien 3' and 'Resurrection' don’t need me to defend them, as they can stand or fall on their own,” wrote SlashFilm’s Russ Fischer. “But the implication here is that those two films blew it with respect to Ripley’s story, and now this is a chance to pretend they didn’t happen so as to give her, as Weaver says, ‘a proper finish.’”
Blomkamp told Entertainment Weekly that working with Weaver recently on the movie “Chappie” helped him shape his ideas for the upcoming “Alien” movie.
“Over the years, I came up with a story for a film in that universe that I wanted to make,” he said. “And then when I talked to her about her experience making those films and what she thought about Ripley and everything else, it informed and changed the film I wanted to make into something different.”
