Shia LaBeouf will star as tennis legend John McEnroe in the upcoming film “Borg vs McEnroe.”
In the film scheduled for release in September, award-winning Danish director Janus Metz brings to life the fierce rivalry between iconic tennis player Björn Borg and McEnroe, showcasing their historical duel at Wimbledon in 1980, said film distributor Curzon Artificial Eye.
Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason will play alongside LaBeouf in the role of Borg, while Lennart Bergelin will play Borg’s trainer. Stellan Skarsgard has also been confirmed for a major role, one of his first in in almost a decade.
A teaser was posted on the film's official Facebook Page.
Lately, LaBeouf has been steering his career towards films favoring an art-house nature.
His recent production, "American Honey," won the Jury Prize for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, noted Digitalchew.
The "Transformers" actor has now turned his attention to the indie film “The Peanut Butter Falcon” which is being filmed in Savannah, Georgia, featuring Dakota Johnson and Bruce Dern.
The film tells the story of Zak, a young man with downs syndrome who runs away from a nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Along the way he meets outlaw-on-the-run Tyler (LaBeouf), who becomes his coach.
The film is written and directed by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz.
