Democratic Sen. Brown's Wife Resigns as Columnist in Conflict

Tuesday, 20 September 2011 11:16 AM EDT

The Pulitzer-prize winning wife of Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has resigned her position as a columnist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Connie Schultz cited a conflict of interest as the reason for the move as her husband seeks re-election, The Washington Post reported.

“In recent weeks, it has become painfully clear that my independence, professionally and personally, is possible only if I’m no longer writing for the newspaper that covers my husband’s Senate race on a daily basis,” Schultz wrote.

Shultz, who won a Pulitzer in 2005 for commentary, has faced criticism from conservatives who alleged that she used her column to promote her husband. She temporarily resigned her post when Brown made his first Senate bid in 2006. She will continue to write for Parade magazine and the Creators Syndicate. Shultz wrote a campaign memoir about Brown’s first Senate run called, “. . . and His Lovely Wife,” the Post reported.
