ESPN reporter Shelley Smith says she's doing well after experiencing stroke-like symptoms in the Golden State Warriors’ locker room after a playoff game Sunday night.
“I’m good,” Smith texted to The Associated Press from her hospital room, and said she was awaiting test results to determine what had caused the symptoms.
ESPN told The Washington Post that Smith “felt ill” in the Oracle Arena locker room after the Warriors’ 113-111 win over San Antonio but “is now alert and responsive.”
“Shelley has consistently proven that she is truly a warrior and her continued strength has been a source of inspiration to so many. We send her the very best wished for a speedy recovery,” ESPN said, and promised more information when it was available.
Smith also tweeted similar sentiments after the incident.
Colleague Ramona Shelbourne tweeted a picture of Smith in the hospital smiling and being hugged by fellow writer Arash Markazi.
Smith had a bout with breast cancer and melanoma in 2014 and has been cancer free since. She was not part of the grueling series of recent layoffs at ESPN.
Warriors PR Director Dan Martinez called the medical team members “real-life frickin heroes” in a tweet following the incident and thanked them for their quick response.
Smith was attended to by medical staff in the training room of the arena until emergency crews could transport her to the hospital.
