At least 35 people were killed and more than 40 injured in a stampede during New Year’s celebrations in Shanghai.
Reuters said large crowds started to stampede just before midnight on the city's waterfront tourist strip known as the Bund.
Authorities canceled a 3-D laser display countdown in hopes of scaling down the unwieldy event, which attracted 300,000 people last year, up from 100,000.
The Telegraph said spectators had rushed to grab money that had been thrown from the balcony of a nearby nightclub.
Many of the injured were students who were taken to area hospitals.
Photos from the scene showed people lying on the ground among debris, at least one man performing chest compressions, and the
area ringed by police, The Associated Press reported.
Twitter users were saddened by the news.
