After receiving the good news, Shakira released a short video on Friday thanking her fans and supporters on — you guessed it — Facebook.
"100 million fans on Facebook. I mean that is incredible," she said in the video. "Thank you so much for your support, for your loyalty, for your love. It's really unbelievable, thank you so much."
The only page that has more "likes" on the social network is the page for the Facebook brand itself, and that the 100 million followers amount to roughly 8 percent of the site's 1.28 billion monthly active users.
Back in 2008, Shakira's Facebook page sported a mere 318,000 followers, and drew hundreds of likes and comments with each post. Nowadays, the photos she posts have been known to garner up to 3.5 million individual likes each.
According to the Wall Street Journal, she employs two people to help her manage the Facebook page, as well as a supervisor, however she also enjoys posting and interacting on the page herself.
What does she like about it? "I can interact meaningfully with [fans] on a regular basis," she said, the WSJ reported, "and the response is immediate."
Shakira performed her hit song "La La La," featuring Carlinhos Brown, at the closing ceremony of the World Cup.
The official music video for the song has received more than 237,000,000 views since it was posted on May 22.
