Actor Seth Rogen will be the new voice of TransLink BC, the Vancouver public transit system. His will be the voice people hear while riding.
The move was prompted by a social media request from The Province and the Vancouver Sun reporter Stephanie Ip, who thought that as a Vancouver native, Rogen would be perfect when a move to get actor Morgan Freeman failed.
“Lots of emails today were along the lines of: ‘What, there wasn't a Canadian actor who could've done the job?’” she tweeted. “After some thought, I do have a suggestion: @Sethrogen. I would happily listen to him announce my transit stops all day, every day BUT ONLY IF IT COMES WITH THE LAUGH.”
One day after Ip sent her tweet, Rogen replied.
The actor and TransLink BC touched base and the deal was set.
"Any opportunity to enrich the lives of the Canadian people is an opportunity I will take," Rogen said in a promotional video.
It won’t be long before Vancouver commuters will hear one of their own make regular announcements over the system’s PA system.
"Hey Vancouver, it's Seth,” Rogen says in the video in an example of what riders may hear. “Here's a tip to make your transit ride even more awesome: I know your bag is probably very nice and you care deeply for it. But that doesn't mean it needs [its] own seat."
The other announcements are similarly etiquette-orientated, CBS News reported.
TransLink BC covered the studio and editing costs, but Rogen didn’t charge the company for lending his voice.
The transit authority announced that commuters will begin hearing Rogen’s voice "in the coming weeks," according to CNN.
Vancouver transit commuters on Twitter seemed excited by the news.
