Seth Rich's Parents Sue Fox News Over Retracted Story

Seth Rich's parents are suing Fox News over a retracted 2017 story Fox News published online that suggested that the former Democratic National Committee staffer was in contact with Wikileaks and his murder may have been in retribution for a supposed leak, CNN reported.

The lawsuit named Fox News reporter Malia Zimmerman, who supposedly worked with businessman Ed Butowsky to develop what court documents charged was a "sham" story about Rich's death in May 2017, which was also referenced on air numerous times, CNN wrote.

The story was later retracted, but the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeks compensation for "mental anguish and emotional distress, emotional pain and suffering, and any other physical and mental injuries," CNN reported.

"No parent should ever have to live through what we have been forced to endure," Joel and Mary Rich said in statement Tuesday night, according to CNN. "The pain and anguish that comes from seeing your murdered son's life and legacy treated as a mere political football is beyond comprehension."

Sean Hannity, who discussed the Rich murder on his show, told his audience that he would stop talking about the case "for now" after the story was retracted by Fox News "out of respect for the family's wishes," NBC News wrote.

A Fox News representative told NBC News that it did not intend to comment on the lawsuit since it was "pending litigation."

Rich was killed in his D.C. neighborhood in July 2016 in what local police said was a botched robbery attempt, The Washington Post reported. Rich's family and D.C. police have denied that Rich was the source of any leaked DNC emails or that his death had anything to do with his work at the DNC, per the Post.
