Seth Meyers welcomed a new baby into the world, but in true celebrity fashion there was nothing normal about the arrival of his son Axel Strahl – he was born in a Manhattan apartment building lobby on Sunday with the proud dad down on the floor next to mom.
The “Late Night” host told his audience about the birth, saying he and wife Alexi Ashe were unable to even make it out of their building before their second child arrived, CNN reported.
Ashe’s labor was progressing quickly, and she didn’t believe they would make it to the car in time, but Meyers said he and their midwife were full of reassurance – until they got to the lobby.
“I'm trying to calm her down,” he said, per CNN. “I know because I've been through exactly one birth. I'm like, ‘This happens all the time.’”
However, he got a shock when he realized that Ashe was giving birth.
“I looked at my wife, and the only way I could describe was she looked like someone who was hiding a baby in a pair of sweatpants,” he joked.
“I called 911 and over the course of a minute conversation, I said, ‘We’re about to have a baby — we’re having a baby — we had a baby,” Meyers said, per Us Magazine.
Minutes after the baby was born, the police and fire department arrived at the scene.
Meyers said his new son’s name was in honor of Ashe’s grandparents, who happened to meet in an Austrian hospital a day after being liberated from a concentration camp, People magazine noted.
It didn’t take long before congratulatory messages from fans began flooding social media.
