Thousands of women, under the mantra "set your girls free," celebrated No Bra Day Monday in honor of October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast cancer survivors and supporters on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook were encouraged to go bra-less for a day to raise awareness and support for the most common form of cancer
among American women, Fox News reported.
The origins of No Bra Day are still a bit murky. The first one was held in 2011, though its initial purpose wasn’t all that clear.
"Launched by an anonymous Internet user self-titled 'Anastasia Doughnuts,' the cause has women of all bra sizes a bit befuddled,"
Yahoo Shine's Piper Weiss wrote at the time. "Is it an homage to bra-burners of the '60s? A grassroots breast cancer awareness program?"
It's since evolved into a full-on breast cancer awareness movement, but some Twitter users feel No Bra Day isn’t meaningful enough.
