The first “Serenity” trailer shows reunited co-stars Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey artfully giving away just a little bit of the story while keeping much more below the surface.

The thriller was written and directed by Steven Knight, who has shown his penchant for playing with audiences’ heads in films like “Locke” and “Redemption” as well as “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” for which he wrote the screenplay.

On the surface, the movie appears to be about a boat captain (McConaughey) whose ex (Hathaway) shows up and asks him to kill her abusive husband by feeding him to the sharks. But the trailer also shows pieces of mysterious conversations with friends and others in the town, steamy scenes between the ex-spouses, bloody sheets, and a suicide, which add up to something more than what it seems.

The trailer ends with one cryptic, unexplained line: “Sometimes we do bad things for good reasons.”

McConaughey and Hathaway previously starred together in 2014's "Intersellar." Also starring in this movie are Djimon Hounsou, Jeremy Strong, and Diane Lane.

"Serenity" was shot on location in Mauritius, an island nation off the coast of southern Africa. Scenes involving the boat were filmed on an actual boat, and McConaughey was taught by an instructor how to fish big game for the movie, People reported.

“This fall, #SecretsWillSurface,” reads the official Twitter page for the movie.

Twitter fans were excited about the movie.
