Senators Voice Sympathy for Soldiers Shot Down

Sen. John McCain said Sunday on “Meet the Press” that President Barack Obama’s Afghanistan troop-withdrawal timetable would be risky for those U.S. armed forces that remain on the ground, according to Politico.

McCain and several other senators also voiced sympathy for the families of the 31 U.S. military personnel who died when insurgents downed their helicopter in Afghanistan Saturday. 
 

 “Why would we want to increase the risk to the lives of the young men and women who are serving?” McCain asked.
 

The 33,000 additional U.S. troops Obama ordered in December, 2009, will be home in 15 months or less. McCain argued those soldiers have been in place for a “very short” time.”

 “The reason I worry a lot is that I’m not sure we have the sufficient number of troops for another fighting season so we can gain control of the eastern side of the country,” he said.
