Four Secret Service agents were involved in a fatal two-car collision in New Hampshire on Tuesday night after Hillary Clinton campaigned nearby.

The on-duty agents, whose names weren't released, were traveling in a Ford Taurus southbound on Route 16 near Wakefield about 7 p.m., said a Facebook post by the Wakefield Police Department.

Police said a northbound Mercury Sable driven by Bruce Danforth, 45, crossed the center line and collided head on with the agents' vehicle.

Danforth died at the scene and the four agents were taken to Frisbee Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Danforth's passengers, Natasha Meroski, 35, and Kristina Buswell, 21, were taken to Frisbee Memorial Hospital and Huggins Hospital.

State police didn't know why the Secret Service agents were in the area, but noted that a motorcade of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had passed through the accident area earlier, said WMUR-TV

The Clinton campaign traveled between Portsmouth and Berlin on Tuesday afternoon, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

"At this time, our personnel have sustained what is described as serious, but non-life-threatening injuries," Secret Service director Joseph Clancy said in a statement provided to the Washington Post. "Please join us as we keep all the victims of this accident and their families in our thoughts and prayers."

Officials told the Post the agents did not belong to any candidates' protective detail, but instead were part of a "jump team," working as additional security and standing post at campaign events. The agents were traveling from one campaign event to another at the time of the accident.
