A new ABC documentary, “Truth and Lies: The Murder of Laci Peterson,” airs on Thursday, Sept. 14, and takes a closer look at the arrest of Scott Peterson, who was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife Laci Peterson in 2002.
The documentary will feature interviews with key investigators as well as with Scott Peterson and his parents, and will include previously unseen footage of Laci Peterson.
The special also reveals detailed accounts from Laci Peterson’s mother, Sharon Rocha, who speaks out about her difficulty in accepting Scott Peterson was capable of murder.
“It was very, very hard to even begin to suspect him, because in the back of my mind I kept thinking, what if he didn’t have anything to do with it?,” Rocha says in a trailer for the documentary, exclusively posted by People.
“I mean, it’s not like this is a total stranger that you might be suspecting,” she adds. “This is somebody that’s been a member of your family for several years now, and it’s really, you know, the back and forth and the guilt about feeling this way, and how it may have an effect on the relationship with my daughter if I’m wrong.”
Laci, who was eight months pregnant, went missing on Christmas Eve in 2002. Four months later, her body was recovered in San Francisco Bay.
During his highly publicized 2004 trial, Scott Peterson was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.
Nearly 15 years later, he spoke out from death row for the first time for a separate A&E documentary series.
"Oh, it was crazy there,” he said, recounting his response upon hearing the final verdict, ABC7 reported. "Just like this amazing, horrible physical reaction I had. I couldn't feel my feet on the floor. I couldn't feel the chair I was sitting in, my vision was even a little blurry."
