A Florida school district is considering a ban on distributing religious materials after a Satanic group asked permission to hand out a Satanic coloring book, something that would be allowed under current rules.
According to The Orlando Sentinel, the Orange County School Board is discussing stopping the distribution of all religious materials from outside groups, although the board can't vote on the issue until January or February. The discussion came after a local Satan worshiping group proposed handing out coloring books about its religion.
"This really has, frankly, gotten out of hand," chairman Bill Sublette told the Sentinel. "I think we've seen a group or groups take advantage of the open forum we've had."
The newspaper reported that a Christian group, World Changers of Florida, had distributed bibles at 18 high schools in January and was planning to do so again. An atheist group had also handed out materials.
Doug Mesner, co-founder and spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, told the Sentinel that the school board’s response to his request to hand out the coloring book indicates they were acting in bad faith.
“It strongly implies they never intended to have a plurality of voices," Mesner told the Sentinel.
The controversy generated numerous comments online.
Many people, who clearly think religion should be in schools, pointed out the all-or-nothing concept.
