Scaring a woman to death got a burglar 10 years in prison this week after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and various other charges related to a 2015 Maine home invasion that led to the fatal heart attack of 62-year-old Connie Louks, WMTW reported.
Carlton Young reached a plea agreement on Monday afternoon, which was accepted by a judge who sentenced the 26-year-old to a decade in prison.
According to authorities, Young's burglary attempt proved to be too stressful for Connie Louks, who was inside her home when he knocked on her doors and windows, Fox News reported.
The woman's home had already been targeted by a group of burglars the day before, when Connie Louks was not there, and Young was among the gang who broke in and stole various items.
The next day they returned, expecting the house to be empty but Connie Louks was inside and, as Young attempted to enter the premises, she had a fatal heart attack.
Police reportedly found the woman dead inside her home when they arrived at the scene, The Miami Herald reported.
According to police, Young had been implicated in a string of burglaries in surrounding towns at around the same time as the fatal burglary and he was charged with manslaughter, attempted burglary, burglary and several other charges.
Young's attorney, Amy Fairfield, said her client was sorry for the loss that Connie Louks' family suffered, adding that Young just wanted the case to end.
"The final straw was he said it's been going on for 3½ years and the family deserves some closure," Fairfield said, according to SeaCoastOnline.com
Connie Louks' husband, Brian Louks, called Young a "coward and a punk," on Monday.
"This is an unimaginable tragedy for my family. Not a day goes by that we don't think about how terrorized Connie felt that day," he said, adding that he hoped Young's "soul rots in hell."
