Santorum Hospitalized for Gastrointestinal Illness; Twitter Users Crack Jokes

By    |   Monday, 15 April 2013 12:35 PM EDT

Former Sen. Rick Santorum was hospitalized over the weekend with a gastrointestinal illness, and liberals are taking the opportunity to make fun of the one-time GOP presidential contender on Twitter.

"While traveling in South Carolina on Saturday, Rick Santorum became ill and was admitted to the hospital for a gastro-intestinal illness and dehydration," Virginia Davis, spokesperson for Patriot Voices, Santorum’s political action committee, said in a statement.

Santorum, who finished second to Mitt Romney in the 2012 GOP primary, was forced to cancel a speaking gig at the Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition Kick Off Monday. He is expected to resume a full schedule later this week.

Santorum's critics mocked the former senator's illness on Twitter over the weekend, and used it as an opportunity to bash his politics. A socially conservative Republican, Santorum opposes gay marriage and is a firm supporter of Second Amendment rights.

Earlier this month, Santorum told Newsmax TV's Steve Malzberg that he may be eyeing a run in 2016.
