Santa Robs Bank, Blends in With San Francisco SantaCon Crowd

By    |   Thursday, 18 December 2014 09:00 AM EST

A man dressed as Santa played the Grinch in San Francisco by robbing a bank amid all the hoopla of a nearby SantaCon event which swamped the vicinity with hundreds dressed in Santa gear. Cops said the suspect didn't stand out.

The Santa-dressed man handed a teller a note last Saturday demanding cash and then walked out with the loot, authorities told KNTV, describing him as about 5-foot-11 and somewhere between 40 to 50 years old.

KRON-TV reported that SantaCon is a citywide pub crawl in which people dressed as Santa Claus come to the Union Square area. Authorities told the television station that police had not made an arrest in the case and detectives need help in identifying the suspect.

The FBI Wednesday released surveillance photos of the Santa-disguised man in hopes someone would recognize him, according to KGO-TV.

The San Francisco Chronicle noted that SantaCon started in San Francisco in 1994 but has spread internationally and The Associated Press reported that many in New York City have complained that SantaCon there had become worse every year because of bad behavior.

Social media responded to the SantaCon robbery mostly with amusement.
