Sandra Bullock has signed on to play Wendy Davis, a Texas state senator who filibustered an anti-abortion bill for 11 hours to stall it, in the upcoming movie “Let Her Speak.”
Mario Correa wrote the script for the movie, and Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal will produce it through Escape Artists, Variety reported.
Davis became a national figure after her filibuster attracted widespread media attention. The move delayed the bill’s passage until after the end of the legislative session. If enacted, the bill would have effectively closed all abortion clinics in the state through restrictive regulations.
Davis went on to challenge Republican Greg Abbott for Texas governor in 2014 but was unsuccessful, losing by 20 points, the Washington Times reported.
The movie doesn’t yet have a studio but will be shopped to several possibilities this week, Variety reported.
Bullock won a Best Actress Oscar for “The Blind Side” in 2010. She recently finished filming “Ocean’s Eight” and will soon begin to work on the Netflix movie “Bird Box,” Variety reported.
Some on Twitter were critical of Bullock — long considered "America's Sweetheart" — for taking the role.
