In San Antonio, an emergency plane landing ended with only minor injuries after a United Express plane experienced problems with the landing gear while in route to Monterrey, Mexico, on Sunday.
The pilot called for an in-flight emergency landing at San Antonio International Airport after receiving a notification that there was an issue with a gear, according to ABC affiliate KSAT.
At the time, SkyWest flight 5588 was headed to Monterrey after departing from Houston.
According to an official with the airport, the emergency was declared just before 3 p.m. Sunday.
A spokesman with the San Antonio Fire Department said the nose of the plane collapsed as it was landing, which deployed the exit slides on the plane, KSAT noted.
“They just announced brace, brace, brace,” said one passenger, Josh Almoite, per KHOU. “Some people were crying, we were holding our brace position for landing. I was very scared, but I was trying to be calm, but the lady next to me was already panicking.”
According to the airline, there were 51 passengers and four crew members aboard the plane, and only a few injuries had been reported, but they weren’t severe.
A female passenger suffered a minor injury to her ankle, CBS San Antonio affiliate KENS-TV reported. She refused treatment, however, so that she could make her connecting flight.
Despite having to be evacuated from the plane via the emergency slides after landing, authorities said everyone was safely evacuated, CBS News reported.
The airline later issued a statement, per KSAT.
“The aircraft was an Embraer-manufactured E175. We have dispatched mechanics to inspect the aircraft and will conduct a full investigation into what may have caused the incident,” the statement said. “We are working with our partner United to provide an additional flight to Monterrey and providing food and beverage for customers.”
One passenger posted a video to Instagram of the scene inside the plane before it landed.
