A royal wedding will take place later this summer for a same-sex couple, the first in Queen Elizabeth’s extended family, and the ex-wife of one of the two gay men will be giving him away "with dignity."

Lord Ivar Mountbatten, son of the third Marquess of Milford Haven and cousin to the queen, will marry James Coyle, in a private chapel in the country estate at Devon, the Daily Mail reported last week.

Mountbatten, 55, and Coyle, 56, met at a Swiss ski resort in Verbier after the British royal admitted two years ago that he had been struggling with his sexuality through his 16-year marriage with Penny Mountbatten which produced three children, the Daily Mail said.

Lord Ivar and Penny Mountbatten and Coyle said they wanted the wedding announcement to be handle "with dignity" because of the children, Ella, 22, Alix, 20, and 15-year-old Luli.

The Sun reported that Lord Ivar and Penny Mountbatten separated in September 2010 and divorced in November 2011. Now, she will be giving her ex-husband away, the Daily Mail said.

The announcement comes on the heels of the historic royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who possibly became the first biracial woman to become a member of the royal family, Time magazine reported.

Markle was born to Thomas Markle, who is white, and Doria Ragland, an African-American. Some British historians suggest that Queen Charlotte, who married King George III, who reigned from 1760 to 1820 was biracial, Time said.

Penny Mountbatten told the Daily Mail that she believes the marriage will be the best for her former husband.

"What I don't think Ivar realizes is how much he has changed as a man since he 'came out,'" Penny Mountbatten said. "James is hugely responsible for that because he's so much fun. Ivar is so much more relaxed these days. He's so much kinder.

"He's become a great cook. I now call him Fanny Cradock. He probably wasn't even aware that by keeping his sexuality a secret it was really quite tormenting him. Now it's 'out' he's a completely different person. Everybody says they've never seen him happier."

Lord Ivar Mountbatten told the Daily Mail that the wedding has the blessing of their extended family, including Prince Edward, his longtime friend.

"Sophie and Edward know of our plans and are really excited for us," Lord Ivar told the Daily Mail. "Sadly they can't come to the wedding. Their diaries are arranged months in advance and they're not around, but they adore James. Everyone adores him."
