Russia’s new Arctic military base is now open to visitors, virtually that is. A virtual tour is available to those who visit the Russian defense ministry’s website.
The virtual tour of the new Arctic Trefoil military base — located in Franz Josef Land — is only giving viewers a glimpse and doesn’t show any new military weaponry or equipment, according to BBC News.
The tour provides people with a 360-degree view of the base’s living quarters, which includes a clinic, library, chapel, gym and cinema.
The average person is limited to viewing the base online, but President Vladimir Putin took a stroll around the new base last month, BBC noted.
The base was built to endure the extremely freezing winter temperatures and will house 150 military personnel, who will be rotated out every 18 months.
According to the Daily Mail, the five-story base will also house nuclear-ready warplanes.
The base is equipped for troops to deploy military jets like the MiG-31 fighters — capable of shooting down long-range bombs — and the SU-34 bomber.
The new base has been unveiled amid the construction of four other Russian Arctic military bases — at Rogachevo, Cape Schmidt, Wrangel and Sredniy, BBC said.
This comes just two years after Russia made headlines for completing the construction of six military bases in the Arctic, according to the Business Insider.
At the time, Russia’s focus was strengthening its military presence, bringing it back to similar levels as where it was during the Cold War, which began in 1947 and ended in 1991.
