Russell Crowe is mourning the death of his father, John Crowe, who died at age 85.
The actor announced the news on Twitter, explaining that his father had died Tuesday in his hometown of 25 years, Coffs Harbour, New South Wales.
"I’m posting this because I know there are people all over the world who’s heart he touched and who’s ribs he tickled with his sparkly eyes and his cheeky attitude to everyone, and everything, and this is probably as efficient a method as any to pass on the news," Russell wrote.
"I arrived back in the bush last night. Today, although the sun is shining and the torrential rain has abated, this date will forever be tinged with sadness. My dear old man, my beautiful dad, the most gentle of men, has passed away," he continued.
"John Alexander Crowe. 13th March 1936- 30th March 2021. Born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Passed away in Coffs Harbour, NSW, his home for the last 25 years. Rest In Peace," Russell added.
John Crowe died onboard a Qantaslink flight. A doctor and crew unsuccessfully attempted to resuscitate him during the flight from Sydney to Coffs Harbour, according to 7News.
"They basically gave him CPR for who knows how long ... probably 18 to 20 minutes," a passenger, Andrew Fraser, told the outlet. "They worked tirelessly and continued after the flight had landed."
The father and son had isolated together towards the start of the coronavirus pandemic at Russell Crowe's Australian property. The "Gladiator" star shared a photo of his dad on Instagram in April, captioning it: "Isolating with the old man. 84 now. Wearing a hat I got at Princeton while shooting A Beautiful Mind."
Since announcing his father's death, the actor has received an outpouring of support from prominent figures and celebrities. Among them was "Today Extra" host David Campbell.
"Oh mate. So very sorry. Thinking of you," he replied to the actor's tweet.
Australian author Julie Goodwin also shared her condolences.
"I'm so sorry. Condolences to you and your family," she responded.
"I am so sorry to hear this Russell. I was lucky enough to meet your Dad a few times. He was lovely, and his eyes did sparkle, just as you describe. Sending love and condolences to you and your family," wrote Australian TV personality Angela Bishop.
"Sorry to hear Russ, horrible news," commented Australian radio personality and TV presenter Ryan James.
"I'm very very sorry for your loss. To you and your family x" added TV personality Yvie Jones.
