Rurik Jutting, a 29-year-old British banker, has been charged in Hong Kong with the murder of two women believed to be sex workers. He's currently in custody while authorities continue to investigate the incident.
The women were found in Jutting's apartment in the
Wan Chai area on Saturday, the BBC News reported. One woman is believed to have been dead for days, her remains found in a suitcase.
Jutting resigned his position at Bank of America Merrill Lynch a week ago. According to BBC News, he programmed his email address to send an automatic reply stating, "I am out of the office. Indefinitely. For urgent inquiries, or indeed any inquiries, please contact someone who is not an insane psychopath."
The South China Morning Post identified one victim as 25-year-old Sumarti Ningsih, of Indonesia, who reportedly entered Hong Kong on a tourist visa. The second victim was a part-time disc jockey, between 25 to 30 years old, but authorities have not yet identified her, according to the newspaper.
Authorities told the Morning Post that they believe the women died at least a day apart. Police arrived at Jutting's apartment on the 31st floor of his high-rise building around 3:45 a.m. on Saturday to find the body of the unidentified woman in the living room with her throat slashed.
The newspaper said it was not until hours later that police found the suitcase with Ningsih's remains, which was on the apartment's balcony.
"She was nearly decapitated and her hands and legs were bound with ropes," a source told the Morning Post, adding that they believe the body could have been in the suitcase for three or four days, as it had started to decompose.
BBC News reported that, according to Juttings' LinkedIn profile, he was a Cambridge University graduate and had attended Winchester College, an independent boarding school in Hampshire.
