Murdoch Pie Attacker Guilty of Assault

Friday, 29 July 2011 02:57 PM EDT

The comedian who smashed a foam “pie” into media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s face was convicted of assault and harassment on Friday.

Jonathan May-Bowles, also known as Jonnie Marbles, admitted the charges in a 15-minute hearing in London. He will be sentenced on Tuesday.

District judge Daphne Wickham rejected a defense request to put off that date as May-Bowles had planned to be on a family vacation. "He is on bail for a serious offence which carries a risk of imprisonment,” she said. "He should have thought about this on July 19 when he committed these offences."

May-Bowles pushed a plate of white foam into Murdoch’s face as the 80-year-old tycoon gave evidence into the phone-hacking scandal before a committee of Britain’s parliament.

Murdoch’s wife Wendi Deng swung a punch at him as she leaped to her husband’s defense. As he left court, May-Bowles borrowed a phrase that Murdoch used before the committee. "I would just like to say this has been the most humble day of my life," he said.
