Queer reality host RuPaul is planning a new show with producer J.J. Abrams that will be based on his rise to global stardom in the ’80s.
The show will be set in New York City and will chronicle RuPaul’s move from Atlanta, Georgia, to study performing arts and his immersion into the club scene, according to Slate. The ’80s setting will enable the show to focus on not only RuPaul’s life, but the coming of age of the queer movement in contrast to the Reagan-era politics of the time.
RuPaul will be an executive producer of the show and will be heavily involved in its production, Slate noted. His current show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” will air this season on VH1 rather than on gay-themed network Logo. The host won his first Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Host last year.
After being active in the club and drag scenes in the 1980s, RuPaul rose to success in the ’90s as a musician, a model, and a VH1 talk show, achieving success unusual for openly gay performers of that time, according to The New York Times.
Twitter erupted in anticipation over a new RuPaul show.
