Ruby Rose, the star of the hit TV series ‘Batwoman,' has quit the show after just one season. The 34-year-old, who plays Batman's cousin Kate Kane, made the announcement in a statement published by Fox News on Wednesday.

"I have made the very difficult decision to not return to 'Batwoman' next season," she said, adding that it was not a decision she made lightly.

"I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created," Rose continued, referencing the growing list of DC Comic superhero shows being released by The CW.

"Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me," Rose said. "Thank you to everyone who made season one a success - I am truly grateful."

No reason for Rose's abrupt departure has been provided but the announcement caught many off guard considering that she landed the role in 2018 and showed no signs of unhappiness.

The network will now have to recast the character for season two of 'Batwoman' but said it would be using the opportunity to put a different spin on the series. Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions hinted at things.

"The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months," a combined statement read.
