Rosie O'Donnell is backing the liberal opponent to Republican New York U.S. Rep. Peter King in his upcoming election later this year.
The comedian and actress, who was a former cohost on ABC's "The View" threw her support behind progressive activist Liuba Grechen Shirley last week, according to Newsday.
"I believe Long Island deserves a representative like Liuba — someone who cares about the American values of compassion, kindness, and community," O'Donnell said, according to Newsday.
Grechen Shirley retweeted O'Donnell's support for her last week.
King appeared to not put too much importance on the announcement, telling Newsday in a statement: "I can't get too excited one way or the other about Rosie O'Donnell."
King, who has been a member of Congress since 1993, won his last election in 2016 for his seat with more than 62 percent of the vote, according to his biography.
Grechen Shirley's campaign manager Josh Henderson told Newsday that actor Billy Baldwin and tennis star Martina Navratilova also have endorsed the progressive candidate.
Newsday reported in October that Democrat Tim Gomes, who owns a Holtsville electrical company, is also running for King's seat and had loaned $1 million of his own money to his campaign.
